What Is Thread Count and Why Does It Matter for Bedsheets?

·MSA Exports, Faisalabad, Pakistan

Thread count is one of the most frequently misunderstood bedsheet specifications. This guide explains what it means, why it matters and how to use it when sourcing wholesale bedsheets from Pakistan.

Thread count (TC) is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric, counted both horizontally (weft threads) and vertically (warp threads). A 300TC sheet has 300 threads per square inch. In general, a higher thread count produces a finer, softer fabric, but the quality of the cotton and the weave type matter just as much as the number.

What thread counts are available from Pakistan?

Pakistani mills produce cotton bedsheets across the full commercial range, from 180TC value fabric to 1000TC high-thread-count sateen. The most commonly exported TC ranges for each market segment are shown below.

  • 180–220TC: Value retail, promotional programmes, developing markets
  • 300–400TC: Standard retail, mid-range wholesale
  • 500–600TC: Premium retail, three-star or four-star hotel linen
  • 800–1000TC: Luxury hotel programmes, premium branded bedding

Does a higher thread count always mean better quality?

Not always. Thread count is one quality indicator, but cotton fibre quality, yarn twist, and finishing processes also significantly affect the feel and durability of the finished sheet. A well-spun 400TC percale from quality cotton can feel better than a poorly spun 800TC sheet. When sourcing, ask for pre-production samples and verify actual construction, not just the TC number on the specification sheet.

Percale vs sateen: which weave at which thread count?

Percale is a plain one-over-one-under weave producing a crisp, cool, durable fabric suited to the 200–400TC range. Sateen uses a four-over-one satin weave that creates a smoother, silkier surface and is typically specified in the 400–1000TC range. Both are widely available from Pakistani mills.
